List of Scary Movies

First off, is this not the scariest freaking picture you have ever seen in your whole life!!!?? I am trying not to look at it while writing this. Anyway.....we noticed that a lot of people are searching the web for scary movie ideas for Halloween. We have 2 scary movies lined up through netflix. The first is the remake  of the Omen with Julia Stiles and Liev Schrieber. We've heard mixed things about it but it looks cool and Danielle loves Julia Stiles. The second is a movie called Dog Soldiers. It's the first movie from the guy who made The Descent, which was an awesome movie. In an effort to help others make some scary movie choices we have compiled this list of our favortie scary movies. They're in no particular order, as that would take too long.

Top 6 (lazy) Scary Movies

1) Children of the Corn: I bet if you watched this movie now it would suck but back when I was like 10 this movie scared the life out of me. Remember Damian and Malichai? God those kids were creepy.

2) Seven: Danielle's favorite movie (which is totally wierd). A classic train wreck style movie. You don't want to watch but you have to. Remember Gweneth at the end? Man that was tough... This movie actually made Kevin Spacey seem dangerous. Then he followed it up with Pay it forward....God I hated that movie.

3) The Blair Witch Project: This movie has gone on to become a horror classic. I'm sure you've all seen it but if you haven't this is the "make you never want to go camping" movie of all times.

4) The Descent: This one is not on video yet so you probably can't see it. It's a kick ass Women trapped in a cave with scary bitey things. The Women kick serious ass in this one.

5) Signs: The M. Night Shaymalanamana movie about Aliens who first put crop circles in your corn field, then kill you. Awesome awesome movie with Mel Gibson and Jaquin Phoenix. Really suspenseful and fun. Mel doesn't bash any jews either....which is nice.

6) The Ring: A little too hollywood for this list almost but still a really good scary movie. When Samara climbs out of that TV at the end I almost threw our TV out the window. We live ground level so we smashed it with a hammer instead.

World Trade Center

This is a special edition of Tommy K's Broadway reviews. Tom went and saw the Oliver Stone WTC movie thursday, the day it opened. There's beena lot of buzz about this movie, especially here in NY. People who were here keep asking each other "Are you gonna go see it?". It's a tough question. I don't know if I want to see it yet. I think everyone has a different feeling about watching a movie about that day. But......Tommy saw it, and wrote a review for us. Thanks Killean.

A first movie review in Tommy Killean’s Broadway Review

World Trade Center

I came home from a two-week vacation in the beautiful country of Ireland.  It was a very peaceful and enjoyable vacation.  I arrived on Tuesday night safely (thank God).  When I awoke early Wednesday morning (Ireland is 5 hours ahead) I had to determine what I was going to do for the day.  I saw an ad for the movie World Trade Center and decided I would go see it.  So for the second time in my life I went by myself to a movie to the first showing on opening day (King Kong was the other). This review will give away NO details on the movie itself but describe how the movie affected others present in the audience and me.
I arrived at the theatre about 15 minutes before the showing and there were about 20 people in the theatre (same as King Kong).  The tension could have been cut with a knife.  There was about 4 or 5 previews all about movies based on true stories.  Then the movie began. 
The moment it started I felt like I was time warped to a little less than 5 years ago.  Thank goodness they didn’t mention that the New York football Giants had an embarrassing loss the night before.  The movie progressed slowly at first then quicker and quicker exactly as that day felt.  There was live footage, special effects that you could not tell were, and obviously film footage of the actors.  It was an incredibly real reenactment of that horrific day.  There was not a dry eye in the house.  Some people were sobbing as others were dabbing their eyes at a minimum (I won’t say where I fell in between).  There were several times where nervous laughter was heard in the theatre as everybody was unsure how to react to it. 
I won’t encourage anybody to go see this BUT at the same time I will NOT discourage anybody from seeing it.  If you are deciding whether or not to see this movie keep in mind that you will feel like you re-live that day.  If you feel up to it then go ahead.  My intentions were to write this review the minute I got home from the theatre but as I noticed about 7 hours later I was still visibly moved.  All in all for a movie based on true yet ghastly events this felt incredibly real.  I give it a 3 ½ Killean rating.

Best Actress

I am sad to say that I have seen none of these performances. I mean, who sees movies with Dame Judi Dench in them? Every year she's nominated and every year no one has any idea what movie they're talking about. Anyway.....The word on the street is that it's between Felicity Huffman and Reese Witherspoon. I bet they give it to Reese Witherspoon. If you do like like 5 "I'm really Hot" movies followed up by a serious movie you're guaranteed a Best Actress Oscar (See Julia Roberts, Jennifer Connolly, Charlize Theron, Kim Bassinger, Halle Berry, Mira Sorvino, Nicole Kidman etc.). In fact, I think ugly women can't win Oscars. Has there ever been an ugly woman who won an Oscar? I mean, look at best Actor. Adrien Brody looks like his face is made out of playdough:

Roberto Begnini is a wierdo:

Know what I mean? Then there's the old men that win: Jack Nicholson, Anthony Hopkins etc...Seems like a double standard.....

Update:

I looked into this a little. That old lady did win for "driving miss daisy". She's not ugly, just old.

Best Supporting Actress

This is going to be a little pathetic. Unfortunately I only saw 2 of the movies from this category. Those 2 are Catherine Keener in Capote and Rachel Weisz in the Constant Gardener. I’m surprised to see Weisz in the supporting actress category. If you asked me what the Constant Gardener was about I would’ve said it was about a woman who discovers a ton of atrocities being committed by drug companies against Africans. Her husband basically does nothing all movie until the last ¼ of the film. With that in mind, she was incredible in this movie. She was totally believable as a Woman on a mission who would do anything to help out the people of Africa.

 

Catherine Keener really did have a supporting role in Capote. She plays Harper Lee, the author of “To Kill a Mockingbird”. She was the base for Truman Capote’s eccentric ways in rural Kansas. It was definitely a performance that made Danielle and I ask “who was that woman playing Harper Lee”, definitely memorable.

 

However, I’ll have to go with Weisz. She just took over that movie.

Best Supporting Actor

After Stephanie’s scathing comment after my post of the Oscar nominees a few weeks back I knew I had to redeem myself. The Oscars are important Stephanie. You’re right. Danielle and I have seen a lot of the nominated movies this year so I feel I’m in a pretty good position to give my opinion. I always use the Danielle meter as my first test. If she falls asleep (Good Night and Good Luck) not a good sign. If she gets pissed off at the government (The Constant Gardener, Syriana) that means a strong performance. If she doesn’t talk during the movie (Capote,Munich) that means a very solid movie. Other than that I just base it on what I thought. First up….Best Supporting Actor.

The nominees are: George Clooney, Syriana. Matt Dillon, Crash. Paul Giamatti,Cinderella Man.Jake Gyllenhal, Brokeback Mountain. William Hurt, A History of Violence. OK. So I haven’t seen Brokeback Mountain or a History of Violence, so, let’s just assume both of those performances sucked.

Paul Giamatti. I was one of the few people who saw this movie but who didn’t like it all that much (I think I was one of the few people that saw it in general as well). I thought it was good but it never had any of those awesome moments you expect from a movie like this. You know what I mean? It just never got me real psyched. He was in the role that could have supplied that moment. I think he let us down.

Matt Dillon, It’s tough to want to give someone an award when the character they play is so sleezy. He’s just such a creep for most of this movie. For some people, like if this was Hugh Grant playing this part, you might think it was the greatest performance ever. With Matt Dill, I just think he’s probably creepy.

George Clooney. That just leaves Clooney. He was very convincing as the CIA agent who just goes over the edge after learning he’s been a part of the problem, not the solution for most of his life. A few of the scenes, like the torture scene, are just incredible. I think he deserves it anyway. He made Good Night and Good Luck and starred in Syriana….Give him something for the effort.

King Kong (with tail between legs)

First off, the critics are morons. This was a great movie?? Come on.. Here's the review I was dreading..

I was of course very excited about this movie, as many people no doubt were. As the movie settled in I kept my hopes up even though there was no action and no Kong for the first hour. I remember well the starts of LOTR, Braveheart etc and the slow start often makes for a thrilling middle and end. This movie had lots of thrills but a lot of crap too. There were a bunch of these awful story lines that went no where. Some kid they found on an island, he and the 1^st mate have this strange father son relationship…they give little clues then all of the sudden, nothing. He’s gone.

The climax with Kong on top of the Empire State Building is worth the price of admission but the last line of the movie, delivered by Jack Black, is just awful. I really have to wonder if anyone watched this movie before they released it. If they cut an hour out of it it could have been a great movie. Instead, it was pretty lame.

King Kong

A few months ago I was stopped dead in my tracks when I saw my first commercial for the new King Kong movie. I grabbed Danielle and was expecting to see the same reaction when I told her. She didn't seem excited. Then I told her the awesome news that not only did it have Kong, the King of the Apes in it, but Dinosuars were in the movie. Not just any dinosaurs, T-Rex's!!!! Now, obviously, she would be excited to see the movie. Instead she responded:

"That movie looks stupid."

I was shocked. How could someone not be psyched to see a giant Ape fight dinosaurs and then climb the Empire State building only to be shot down by planes?

Danielle responded by stating the movie would be horrible and no one  want to see it. There were others in the room that agreed with her. I disagreed. The only question now is: Will she deny her desire to go see King Kong because of her statement? We shall see.....

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

This movie rocked. Danielle, Michelle and I went and saw it on Sunday. Michelle endured a 3 day 4 movie Potter marathon in order to be ready for this one, but it was worth it! It starts out at the Quidditch World Cup. They kind of cut all of the action out but after the match the real excitement happens. The death eaters are back and they apparently are pissed.

            After that the kids go back to school and find out that the tri-wizards tournament is taking place at Hogwarts. Basically it’s a 3 event Olympics where 1 student from each of the 3 schools competes. Of course things get messed up when Harry gets thrown into the mix. I won’t spoil any of the tournament but it’s all awesome and definitely intense.

            The best part of the movie is the end. Isn’t it awesome when that happens? You know who is back in the picture and looks scary as all hell. He’s played by the real nasty Nazi from Schindler’s List, Ralph Fiennes.

            I thought the whole movie was awesome and everyone agreed. We saw it on IMAX which makes it even better. Potter Rules!

            We saw this movie on Friday. I thought it was good. Danielle….She fell asleep. So that should tell you something about the movie. It was a little slow. It was based on Edward Murrow, an old news reporter for CBS News and his battle to combat the radical work of Senator Joe McCarthy (no relation). McCarthy was basically using blanket accusations to accuse anyone who disagreed with him of being a communist. This was during the 50’s, a time when everyone thought that we were going to be bombed by the Russians and the government handed out pamphlets on how to spot a Commie (the easiest way is by smell, they all smell).

            I won’t go too much into the specifics but it was cool how they used the actor to portray all of Edward Murrow’s broadcasts but used the old footage to show MCCarthy and his attacks. Made it more a history lesson than most historical films since you knew you were seeing an accurate representation of how it all happened. The guy who played Murrow (David Strahian or something like that) was awesome. They never showed much outside of his broadcasts but you could still feel how much pressure he was bringing on himself by standing up to McCarthy.

            I would give it a 3.5 out of 5 and Danielle recommends it if you’re having a hard time falling asleep.
